Mehmet Kamil Horasan, the first dentist of the Horasan family, was born in the historical backdrop of Istanbul in 1898. Within the city’s intricate layers of culture, his father, Zeynel Abidin, occupied the prestigious role of a scholar at Fatih Madrasa (respected educational institution in Istanbul).

During the era of the Ottoman Empire, a time when the echoes of history resonated down the paved streets, those afflicted by teeth problems turned to barbershops for assistance. The prescribed remedy for dental concerns at that time was to visit the skilled hands of a barber, who would extract the troublesome tooth. Barbers decorated their shop fronts with signs bearing the names and the teeth of those who had entrusted them. Those signs were a way of encouraging trust and confidence.

In 1923, a few months before the proclamation of the Republic of Türkiye, 25-year-old Mehmet Kamil Horasan completed his education at Istanbul Dar-ül Fünun, a prestigious institution that would later become Istanbul University.

His diploma, a parchment in the script of Ottoman Turkish, foretold a significant shift within the landscape of dentistry – a transition from the simple shops of barbers to modern clinics.

In the heart of Old Town Istanbul, where the cobbled streets whispered tales of past centuries, Sirkeci district emerged as the vibrant epicenter. It was here, right behind the Central Postal Office, Mehmet Kamil decided to open his practice. The pulse of change and the rhythm of the city synchronised in a glorious harmony!

As the newly born Republic of Türkiye unfurled its wings, a linguistic evolution unfolded. Within the barbershops, individuals engaged in the service of tooth extraction were called “dişçi” (dental worker).

Yet, across this shifting landscape, a more profound distinction emerged. Those, like Mehmet Kamil Horasan, who had navigated through the challenges of medical studies, were rewarded with the esteemed title of “Diş tabibi” (dental surgeon).

Mehmet Kamil Horasan and the following generation of dentists were very careful about their titles. They preferred to be referred as “diş tabibi” (dental surgeon) rather than “dişçi” (dental workers) because “dişçi” were found in the barbershops.
Mehmet Kamil had two sons: Mustafa Vildan and Adnan. Tragically, little Adnan lost the battle with an illness at the tender age of 9 months. Mustafa Vildan remained as the only child of the family.

At 25, the same age at which his father, Dentist Mehmet Kamil, had completed his own education, Mustafa Vildan successfully finished his studies at Istanbul University. In 1946, he embarked on his dental practice alongside his father, Mehmet Kamil.

In the subsequent years, when the beautiful harmony in Sirkeci district started to vanish and replaced its own peace with chaos, they made a decision to relocate their practice to the opposite side of the Bosphorus. They opened a new dental clinic on the Anatolian Side of Istanbul.

Mustafa Vildan had the joy of raising two sons and one daughter. His second son, born in 1951, carried the name of his beloved late brother, Adnan. When little Adnan was nine months old, his mother, Necla Horasan, was sleeping with fear every night, praying that the past would not repeat itself.

While growing up in his father’s dental clinic, Adnan Horasan cultivated an extraordinary curiosity and keen interest in the field of dentistry. His aspirations were singular in their focus– there was only one profession he desired, and that was dentistry. He completed his studies at Marmara University and was awarded a diploma in 1975. He then commenced working alongside his father in the clinic, which was now freshly located in Kadıköy – Moda.

Adnan Horasan had the joy of raising two children. As it has become a tradition of the Horasan family, the legacy is continued by one of them. His first child, a daughter named Beril, was born in 1979.

From an early age Beril demonstrated exceptional talent and remarkable skill, much like her father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

Having spent a lot of time with her family elders, Beril Horasan chose to carry on the family legacy by becoming a dentist herself.
With a passion that has been going on for generations, she graduated from Yeditepe University Faculty of Dentistry in 2003.
Following her graduation, Beril seamlessly joined her father’s dental clinic, embarking on a vibrant journey spanning over two decades.

Beril Horasan, mother of two children and a skilful dentist, currently continues the successful legacy of Horasan Dental Clinic in Istanbul.
